Western Power questions community input!

by Toni Warden 6/25/2008 6:22:00 PM

Western Power have announced that the submission period is to be extended to the 31st July 2008!

Worryingly, Western Power have also been critical of what they called “automated and generic submissions”.   Western Power made these criticisms on it's website recently.  It is suggested by Western Power that these letters (painstakingly set up so that people can have their own say on their concerns about the submission process) do not accurately reflect individual circumstances and opinion of the community.

Clearly Western Power is not reading your letters, or the comments you are writing on the bottom of them.  The irony is that it was Western Power’s horrifically constructed “Site Selection Process Paper” and unreasonably short comment period that prompted the SETS Group to set up a tool for the community to properly and quickly reflect the community’s concerns.

Obviously Western Power is getting the message that the community powerfully rejects its attempt to solely base the site selection to the Kalamunda state forest and Priority 1 water catchment area.  Do you think Western Power really thought the community wouldn’t see what they were trying to do through its “Site Selection Process Paper”?

You still have time to have your say, so please, if you haven’t had a chance yet, or if you know of someone who is equally concerned (after all the state forests belong to all Western Australians), please forward them our website link and ask them to use the wizard, write their thoughts at the end and show Western Power that Eastern Terminal is not needed!

Remember, you can have your say by posting your comments under this article!

To the employees of Western Power who are responsible for this substation project. I am sure that you are regular visitors to this website.

Hello, are you listening to us?

KALAMUNDA STATE FOREST IS NOT VACANT LAND and it is VERY BAD to clear native vegetation to build substations!

You know you have other options, we know you have other options, so why aren't you informing us about them? Please tell us about your other options. I would appreciate a public reply on this website. What about renewable energy? Please comment here.

Your so-called "site selection process" seems rather ridiculous - what are we supposed to be commenting on when it seems you've already selected a site - you don't even attempt to outline other areas in your "site selection" paper.

The Jarrah forest of Australia's south west is the only Jarrah forest in the world and deserves protection, as does all remaining vegetation on this planet. This isn't just some hippy concept, it's actually necessary for our future survival on this planet! Google "climate change" if you're not sure what I'm on about.

As a "diamond" sponsor of the Bibbulmun Track Foundation it states on their website at www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/SupportUs/Sponsors.aspx that you are "committed to the protection of the natural environment and the preservation of biodiversity for the benefit of current and future generations." What a load of rubbish - these are just empty words that don't stand up to your actions.

We, the Perth Hills community are the ones who are committed to the protection of OUR natural environment and the preservation of biodiversity for the benefit of OURSELVES AND OUR CHILDREN, which is why we will fight you every step of the way to STOP THE EASTERN TERMINAL SUBSTATION!

On the topic of "automated" submissions - I have yet to receive an acknowledgement from you for my so-called automated submission, which included 2 paragraphs of my own personal comments which I thought about long and hard while typing. Perhaps, as you've so kindly extended the submission date, I'll rewrite my submission by hand in the hope that it will be seen as more personal.

Hello Western Power - you don't seem to be listening. This is not just a case of 'not-in-my-backyard-ism' but a genuine concern for the flora and fauna of the area and for the amenity of the residents. There MUST be a better location for this substation, one that will satisfy most people, including your engineers.
Our native forest is already under great pressure from dieback, climate change and clearing for roads and housing. Don't put a dangerous, environmentally insensitive facility like this in the middle of it.

I do hope that Western Power don’t check this page - waste of time it seems. Would it not be more formal (and possibly more influential) to write to Western Power with ACTUAL reasons against the project, as opposed to... well- this? Go find some declared rare flora on-site, a significant habitat area belonging to a threatened species, or a threatened ecological community. I know for a fact the people of Western Power, who are like you and I and most of which probably care for the environment more than you and I, would love to receive such a finding. But wait, they will! Western Power contract environmental consultants to conduct spring flora surveys, survey the area for habitat trees and signs of habitual purposes and report on the presence of dieback (or test if there seems to be no dieback or the site holds no indicator species). But if you can’t come up with the hard facts, your voice is limited, as sad as that sounds. The areas they put these “dangerous, environmentally insensitive facilities” are for most of the time highly degraded. When western power go in, the site then becomes their responsibility and for most of the part it becomes their duty to construct a facility so as not to influence surrounding areas. But that is all I have to say for now. If any luck you may stop this project, but when your complaining about the sweltering heat during summer and electricity restrictions on air-conditioning units, you’ll know exactly why your in that situation.

Hi Scott

600 people wrote to Western Power with ACTUAL reasons as to why WP shouldn't put Eastern Terminal in this highly environmentally sensitive area! They were sent environmental reasons (such as this is habitat for the highly endangered Red Tailed cockatoo, just to name one of these significant species that are found in this area), they were sent technical reasons as to why they should not pursue the upgrade to the 330kV transmission line and Eastern Terminal, they were sent economic reasons why they should not pursue this. THEY HAVE SO FAR IGNORED ALL THESE REASONS!

I'm sure that WP do as much as they can to put these things in environmentally degraded areas, but for over 20 years this Priority 1 water catchment pristine bush area has been a target of their focus. Most environmentalists (who have not been paid by WP) are aware that WP's "spring surveys" are not a true snap shot that a full three year proper survey would reveal. WP have been responsible for the transmission lines in this area for some time, but have not lived up to their responsibility to look after it. We who live here have documented their lack of care in and around their transmission lines. WP and their contractors have been caught not adhering to preventing dieback spread and environmental degradation in this area. WP facilities have been responsible for several devastating severe fires in this area (after all it is a extreme bush fire risk area that is not conducive to these types of "dangerous, environmentally insensitive facilities". All this evidence has NOT given us a strong voice at all or we wouldn't still be having to do this! The coal fired generation industry has big bucks riding on this development, and in turn so does WP.

As for air-conditioning in summer - I don't have it. Plus, I've just bought solar panels for my house, as WP are radically ramping up their costs to pay for all of this "so-called necessary" infrastructure. If you get a chance to thoroughly investigate our website, you will come to understand that WP do not need to put this upgrade through and charge the people of WA like wounded bulls for the privilege. Our mid-west gas generation projects are enough to power Perth metro area (and a whole lot cleaner!).
